Major Sewer Improvement Effort

North Rillito Interceptor Relief

The North Rillito Interceptor (NRI) Relief Project will connect the NRI and the SRI in the Columbus Boulevard area. Ultimately, this new connection allows the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) to convey 10 million gallons of wastewater a day, reducing the potential for sewer overflows and ensuring compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for capacity, management, operations and maintenance.

Construction of the new NRI Relief facilities requires heavy civil work related to excavation for structures and the sewer siphon from the north bank to the south bank of the Rillito River.

The construction work area is along Columbus Boulevard from Paradise Falls north to the end of Columbus Boulevard.

Residents should anticipate large equipment traveling through/nearby the work area. The traveling public should expect delays when driving, bicycling or walking in this work area. For your safety, please observe all traffic control signage, message boards, and obey reduced speed limits.

When complete, most of the new facility will be underground and not visible to travelers in the area. The memorial marker that was located in the center island at the northern end of Columbus Boulevard, has been reinstalled to its original location.
