The Old Nogales Interceptor/Aerospace Corridor/Park Avenue Sewer Augmentation
Details
This project is designed to increase capacity of the existing Old Nogales Interceptor (ONI) and the Park Avenue Sewer in addition to installing new sewer infrastructure to manage the future anticipated flows along the new Aerospace Corridor (ASC) and Aerospace Parkway. The total length of the project is nearly 14 miles and extends west along Old Vail Connection Road from the Wilmot State Prison to Nogales Highway and north along the east side of Nogales Highway, where it discharges into the Southeast Interceptor at 36th Street and Euclid Avenue. The work has been completed in phases.
Construction on the final phase of the Old Nogales Interceptor project began in January 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in approximately two-years.
Work will consist of:
- Installation of new 36-inch diameter sewer pipe from 36th Street/Euclid Avenue south along the east side of Nogales Highway to Aerospace Parkway.
- To lessen the impact to the traveling public, the contractor will execute a jack and bore operation beneath Interstate 10, Ajo Way, Irvington Road, Drexel Road, Valencia Road and Hermans Road. (Jack and bore is a method of trenchless horizontal construction where construction crews drill a hole underground horizontally between two points without disturbing the surface.)
- Coordination with the Union Pacific railroad.
- Water and sewer services will not be disrupted by this work.
- There may be times when the contractor is working concurrently in various locations within the project limits.
What to expect:
- Intermittent lane restrictions in and around the work area.
- The project team will coordinate with local police, emergency responders, trash pick-up services, the United States Postal Service and area schools as needed.
- Installation of new sewer infrastructure and sewer rehabilitation work typically occurs within the County sewer right-of-way easement.
- Providing property access for sewer and manhole facilities within the Pima County sewer easement is required by law.
The improvements to the Park Avenue Sewer, which extends along Drexel Road from Park Avenue to 1st Avenue, was completed during the summer months of June - August 2017.
The Aerospace Corridor (ASC) and Aerospace Parkway phase of the project, which follows the Old Vail Connection Road alignment from the Wilmot Prison west to Nogales Highway and north to Aerospace Parkway was completed in November 2018.
