Tucson Boulevard Diversion Structure Replacement
Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD), and its contractor, Hunter Contracting, will begin work to replace the existing diversion structure located within Pima County property at the northern end of Tucson Boulevard, just south of the Rillito River. This project requires the design and installation of a new composite diversion structure with modifications to the surrounding sewer lines.
The existing structure requires confined space entry measures to enter and adjust flows, and the high turbulence of this old structure generates hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) which results in the occasional rotten egg sewage smell near the structure. The gates in the existing structure also do not function properly. This project intends to replace the existing structure with a new system that is corrosion resistant and reduces turbulence.
Work will consist of installing a temporary, above ground, sewer bypass system, excavation, removal and replacement of the existing diversion structure, removal and replacement of an existing 54-inch pipe along a portion of both Tucson Boulevard and Roger Road. Replacement of some manholes on Tucson Boulevard will also be completed during this project.
Currently, construction is scheduled to begin in mid-March 2022 and take approximately four months to be completed.
